From NetworkStuff

There are only two open source WAN or network emulation software products I'm aware of. Details on each follow, in my order of preference;

NIST Net

Last updated in 2006!

Main Site: http://w3.antd.nist.gov/tools/nistnet/

Download: http://w3.antd.nist.gov/tools/nistnet/requestform.html or locally here: nistnet.2.0.12.tar.gz

A rather good guide to using the program can be found here: http://6200networks.com/?p=97

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot be run on the PC the testing will take place from/on.
  • Requires a PC with two network cards installed
  • Requires a PC (aside from the PC the testing will take place from/on) to be connected to the network (not always an easy task in a corporate environment)

DummyNet

Main Site: http://info.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ip_dummynet/

Download Booty Floppy: http://info.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ip_dummynet/pico.000608.bin or locally here: pico.000608.bin

Drawbacks:

  • Requires FreeBSD!
  • Floppy Image! (You could try extracting the files and using FreeSBIE instead: http://www.freesbie.org/ instead)
  • Cannot be run on the PC the testing will take place from/on.
  • Requires a PC with two network cards installed
  • Requires a PC (aside from the PC the testing will take place from/on) to be connected to the network (not always an easy task in a corporate environment)

If you are a business user, are unable to use open source products for some reason or simply don't have a spare PC with two network cards installed, see the WAN Emulation Software - Commercial article.
